2018 African Senior Athletics Championships medallists will be going home with a total of $384,000 after the competition tagged Asaba 2018 held in Delta state of Nigeria.
For the first time in the history of the African championships, athletes from Nigeria and other African countries will not just go home with their medals, but with monetary reward.
The Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of the 2018 African Senior Athletics Championship, Solomon Ogba on Sunday revealed prize money for athletes who won medals in Asaba.
“We will be giving prize money to athletes for the first time in the history of the African Championships. This means that athletes from Nigeria and other countries will not just go home with their medals,”
Ogba pointed out that $3000 was meant for gold medallists and while silver medalists will be rewarded with $2000, bronze medalists will smile home with $1000.
“This is part of the package we have to make Asaba 2018 different. The gold medallists will receive $3,000 each while silver medallists will receive $2,000 and bronze medallists will have $1,000 each,” He said.
The championships, which began on Wednesday, ended on Sunday with over 1,000 athletes in attendance.
Over 120 medals were won at the 2018 African Senior Athletics Championship. Meanwhile, Algeria will host the next edition of the championship in 2020.
