Akwa Ibom’s Judo team Coach, Catherine Ekuta will be leading Nigeria’s Judo team at the 3RD AFRICAN YOUTH GAMES taking place in Algiers from Wednesday, July 18 to 28.
Catherine alongside Coach Oluwatoyin Ojo and eight Judokas are among the 416 members of the contingent who departed the country to represent Nigeria in the 3rd African Youth Games.
Coach Catherine guided Akwa Ibom State Judo team to emerge the overall best team at the just concluded 1st Gov. Nyesom Wike National Open Judo Championship in Port Harcourt, with 10 Gold, 4 Silver and 9 Bronze medals.
The 2004 Olympian said she was impressed with the level of the team’s preparation and hopeful of a podium finish.
“I would say the level of preparation in Abuja was standard and our Judokas are highly motivated to represent the country.
“We are hopeful of medals by the Grace of God,” she said.
Team Nigeria is made up of 280 athletes and 136 officials drawned from 24 sports, including coaches, secretaries, medical and anti-doping personnel, physiotherapists, psychologists, chaperones, referees and umpires.
Four female Judokas will fight in the -44kg, -52kg, -63kg and -78 kg while their male counterparts will battle their opponents in the -55kg, -66kg, -88kg and -100kg weight categories.
The quadrennial festival will serve as a qualifying process for the Summer Youth Olympics Games, billed for Buenos-Aires, Argentina from October 6 – 19, 2018.
