Leeds United might have ended their 16-year wait for Premier league football, but how did they achieve this feat?

The promotion came on Friday after fellow contenders West Bromwich Albion were defeated by Huddersfield.

The celebrations are deservedly, but how has their journey been?

Leeds appointed tactician Marcelo Bielsa in June 2018, and in his first press conference he reacted to the question on promotion; “it would be impossible not to be dreaming about that happening”.

This press conference was what all Leeds supporters were aiming at.

In his first season, the Argentine tactician challenged for promotion.

With few games to go, Bielsa was accused by then Derby coach Frank Lampard for sending one of his coaching staffs to watch and record Derby’s training, an act regarded by Lampard as ” unethical”.

Bielsa, widely expected to resign to the fact but accepted the charge.

Five days later, he called for an emergency press conference, attesting to the allegations, saying he he’s been sending people to watch all of their opponents training sessions well documented in computer.

The football association fined Leeds £200, 000, an amount Bielsa singlehandedly paid.

With just four games to go, Leeds where three points clear of third placed Sheffield, but how did they fail?

Here comes Wigan Athletic.

Wigan has never win a game on the road all season, it appears very soft for the Whites on paper, but lost 2-1 to Wigan at home, although they had 77% ball possession coupled with 36 attempts and a missed penalty.

Bielsa later conceded hope of automatic qualification after loosing 2-0 to Brentford.

“We should have finished in the top two this season. We have had many games that we deserved to win that we didn’t win,” he said.

“Obviously it was not our destiny to finish in the top two. We have needed twice as many opportunities to score a goal as other teams [at the top of the table] but you can’t say to a team that has had all those chances that they did not deserve to win,” Added the Argentine.

Bielsa entered the 2019/2020 season with fresh facts to prove.

He brought in Jack Harrison on loan from Manchester City and Patrick Bamford on a permanent basis.

Another line of action is to follow.

Bamford, better known in the championship for his goals after a spell with Brentford has been banging goals for Bielsa’s side.

Second place West Brom game against Huddersfield was key to Bielsa and his men, with a win for West Brom, the promotion is delayed, but Huddersfield who themselves needed four points to safe their championship stay defeated them 2-1 to ensure the Whites wait for Premier league football is over.

A win against Derby county will crown them champions of English second tier division, the championship.
