Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed as Manchester United Caretaker Manager on December 19, 2018, after succeeding Jose Mourinho for the rest of the 2018-19 season.

However, on 28 March 2019, he signed a three-year contract to take over as Man United’s manager on a permanent basis.

Since becoming manager, some players have been axed out from the team especially those struggling for playing time considering their future with the club was uncertain.

This was however, to ship out dead weight and to rebuild the first team squad.

The mass overhaul was in response to United’s dismal end of season form where the Red Devils won just two of their final thirteen (13) matches across all competitions. The following are players who have been axed by Solskjaer:

Marcos Rojo:

In April 2019, after a run of injuries, Rojo said that United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær had told him he was part of his plans when Solskjær was appointed on a temporary basis in December 2018.

However, he made only one Premier League start the next season, playing 9 games in all competitions before being loaned out.

Antonio Valencia:

In March 2019, Manchester United declined to take up the option to extend Valencia’s contract by an extra year, bringing to an end his 10-year spell with the club when his contract expired in June.

Valencia left Manchester United having registered 325 Premier League appearances, which remains a record for a South American player.

Matteo Darmian:

The 29-year-old, who signed from Torino in 2015, leaves Old Trafford after making 92 appearances for the club.

Darmian, played just three times for United following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s arrival as manager in December 2018.

Ander Herrera:

Herrera signed for United from Athletic Bilbao in 2014, and after a slow start to life at the club, he established himself as a key player at Old Trafford.

He has made 189 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 20 goals

Alexis Sanchez:

On 22 January 2018, it was announced that Sánchez had completed a transfer to Manchester United, in a swap deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move the opposite way.

Unfortunately, he struggled to settle at the club and was loan out to Inter Milan.

Romelu Lukaku:

The Belgium striker joined United from Chelsea for £75million in July 2017, scoring 42 goals over his two years at the club. But he lost his mojo during his second season at Old Trafford and left to join Inter in the summer in a deal worth £74m.

Chris Smalling:

On 27 January 2010, Manchester United announced that they had signed Smalling, for an undisclosed fee. However, On 30 August 2019, Smalling joined Serie A club Roma on loan for the 2019–20 season.

Ashley Young:

He joined United in the summer of 2011 and made 261 appearances for the Reds, scoring 19 goals. However, Ashley Young has Manchester United for Inter Milan in a reported £1.5m deal.
